George Chinnery exhibition at Asia House
Starts: 4 November 2011 - ends: 21 January 2012The first exhibition of George Chinnery's work to be shown in Britain for over 50 years opens today at Asia House in London.
Sponsored by HSBC, The Flamboyant Mr Chinnery (1774-1852) An English Artist in India and China will be on display until 21 January 2012 and features more than 100 works, many of which have never before been seen by the British public.
Alongside loans from major UK institutions including the British Museum and National Portrait Gallery, the exhibition also includes works from our corporate art collections in Hong Kong and London, loaned as part of our international Cultural Exchange programme.
Chinnery, a contemporary of Turner, was born in London but spent the last fifty years of his life in India and on the China coast in Hong Kong and Macau. He immersed himself in these cultures, and his drawings and watercolours of local people and their daily activities are regarded by many as his most compelling work.
