What do different cultures think about climate change?

HSBC's first international survey of public attitudes towards climate change highlighted a surprising spectrum of opinions across the world.

  • People in developing countries are most concerned about the need to combat climate change - around 60% of respondents registered a high level of concern in China, India, Mexico and Brazil, compared with only 22% in the UK and 26% in Germany

  • People's assessment of their commitment to tackling climate change is also higher in developing countries. Around 47% of people indicated high levels of personal commitment to combating climate change in India and Brazil, compared with only 19% in the UK

  • Awareness of climate change is high everywhere. People in China were least aware - with 5% saying they had never heard of it. France and Brazil were the most aware with over 90% of people agreeing that they had heard a great deal

  • Climate change ranks as one of the world's major concerns. In Mexico, Brazil and China it is a greater concern than global poverty, children's future, terrorism, disease or natural disaster

  • People in all countries say that they are prepared to do something themselves to reduce climate change, although people would rather spend extra time or change their lifestyle than spend additional money to do it

  • Upwards of 45% of people in Mexico, Brazil, China and India believe that they are personally making a significant effort to help reduce climate change through the way they live their life

Nine thousand respondents completed an internet based survey in nine countries for the HSBC Climate Confidence Index. The countries surveyed were: Brazil, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, India, Mexico, UK and Asia.
