The selection process
To provide an outside perspective and access to new talent the shortlist is drawn up by a different Artistic Consultant each year. The laureates are then chosen by a panel including representatives from HSBC and from the cultural world. For 2008, the Artistic Consultant was Chantal Grandé, owner and director of the Forvm gallery in Tarragone, Spain
The selection process takes place from October to December each year and the contest is open to photographers who meet the following criteria:
- Living, contemporary, of all ages and nationalities
- Work that strives to capture the real world, with no restrictions as to approach or technique
- The artists must not have already produced a monographic book of their work
- The Foundation will not sponsor projects for which other prizes and scholarships have already been established
2008 Executive Committee
The Executive Committee was made up of representatives of HSBC and qualified artistic professionals. The Committee was responsible for selecting an Artistic Consultant, choosing the winning artists and validating the actions undertaken by the Fondation HSBC pour la Photographie
The chosen photographers receive:
- a monographic book of their work, co-edited with Actes Sud, to be published in the Fondation HSBC pour la Photographie Collection
- an exhibition of their work in Paris which tours to other French regions and abroad;
- the sale of at least six of their works (for a total of EUR 5 000) to the Fondation HSBC pour la Photographie.
