HSBC Celebration of Light

This international fireworks and musical competition lights up the skies over Vancouver's English Bay as three countries compete for the title each year.

Project date: Ongoing since 2001



Since its creation the competition has attracted the world's leading fireworks designers and is now a highly prestigious event. The bay creates an exciting arena where crowds of spectators can enjoy the displays.

Competitors often use the event to unveil the latest techniques and use the most innovative fireworks in order to be crowned the winner. This year, the Festival took place from 23rd July to 2nd August, and saw China, USA and Canada compete for the title. The 2008 event was won by the host nation, Canada.

The Shaw Festival

Internationally known and recognised, the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada, is the only theatre in the world that specializes exclusively in plays by George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries.

The Shaw Festival also offers students the opportunity to experience theatre in a way that is affordable, accessible and exciting. For students who want to learn more about the world of live theatre, the festival provides opportunities to go behind-the-scenes and to meet and learn from working theatre professionals.



The Festival is important in bringing the work of the Irish playwright to new audiences around the world. His plays often deal with social issues that are common to many cultures and the success of The Shaw Festival is a testament to the longevity of his work.
